The adage ‘Location, Location, Location’ could not apply more to the Charterhouse Outdoor Centre.  It is situated close to the spectacular ‘Cheddar Gorge’, nestled on the top of the Mendip Hills, in an area of outstanding natural beauty (AONB) in Somerset.

Whether you’re planning a family celebration, an outdoorsy weekend with friends or are a special interest group needing a base for your event, Charterhouse is the perfect location. 

The hamlet of Charterhouse is a short walk away from Blackmoor Nature Reserve and its location makes the centre an ideal venue as a base for walking, climbing and caving groups. If you’re a family group you could visit some of the local attractions like the Cathedral City of Wells, Wookey Hole, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury or Weston Super Mare which are all within 30 minutes of the centre. 

There is a modern kitchen and a large dining hall for communal eating. The bunk-house style bedrooms fit between 4 and 6 people in each with 7 of the rooms having en suite shower rooms. In total there is accommodation for up to 63 people in 12 dorms a disabled access lift between floors and a disabled ground floor room with an en-suite shower room.  

There is plenty of space outside for you to enjoy and relax. We also have a visitor lounge and additional classroom available for use. 

Hire is on a self-catering basis however, should you wish, catering can be provided for an extra fee. 

Centres come without bedding provided – customers bringing their own sleeping bags or duvets, however bedding can be provided at an extra cost also.

The Outdoor Centre is a separate centre within the grounds of Kilve Court.  

The ODC is set in glorious Somerset countryside surrounded by the stunning Quantock Hills Area of Outstanding National Beauty (AONB) and less than a mile away from Kilve’s Jurassic beach, so bring your fossil hammer! 

The Outdoor Centre includes the Quantock Hall – a large indoor space that can be used as a dining room or meeting room. There is also a spacious outdoor area with a patio, a sports pitch and a purpose-built campfire area! 

Accommodation is in heated cabins and can hold up to 76 people in total. All cabins have keypad access, smoke alarms and emergency alarms. One of the cabins which has 3 beds is wheelchair friendly and has a hoist. 

There are toilet and shower blocks a very short walk from the cabins. The toilet blocks have automatic sensor lighting so that if anyone needs to go during the night, they don’t need torches. The site is well lit at night, there is a 360-degree lighting tower that lights the whole site, as well as lights on each cabin. Disabled facilities are also available. 

The main dining hall is light and airy and is also perfect for conferences, meetings, discos and parties. It has a large projector and screen, speakers and an amplifier. 

Outside Area 

Outside, we have a large patio with picnic tables and a sports pitch with a five-a-side football area. There is also a games chest where you can find balls, tennis racquets, skipping ropes and bats.
